Cottage Garden Aquilegia

We have been growing this Aquilegia in the cottage garden for many years. The exact variety is unknown to us, but I think it has some heritage in an old variety called Mrs Bradshaw.

It tends to come true from seed, but occasionally throws off a surprise new flower colour and shape.

Forms a self-supporting rosette of leaves with upright flower stems around 2-foot tall, masses of drooping flowers in Late May and early June

Why Grow Aquilegia?

  • 🏡 Ideal for Cottage Gardens – A traditional heirloom variety, perfect for rustic mixed self-seeding and replicating cottage gardens.

  • Bees love it in early Spring and summer

Growing Information:

  • 🌱 Sow: any time of year in final flowering position. Alternatively, in seed compost and transplant to flowering position when at 4 leaf stage

  • ☀️ Position: Full sun, tolerates very poor and gravel-filled soils

  • 📏 Spacing: 30-90cm apart

  • 🌾 Harvest: seed from brown seed pods in July and spread around the garden, or leave to seed naturally
