Cottage Garden Eryngium Planum or Sea Holly seed

A pretty herbaceous thistle-like flowering plant, 'Sea Holly' is a clump-forming hardy perennial which produces masses of rich blue Thistle like blooms around 2" in diameter and held at 2-3-feet.

Perennial Eryngium blooms from June through to August and later in good years.   Tolerates most soil and situations and is drought tolerant

Sea Holly forms a low clump or mound around 18-inch tall and across. Does best without too much competition, so don't over crowd in mixed borders. Sea Holly can be left to stand and dries to brown lasting most of the early winter, looks great when frosted.

Great architectural value and well worth growing in a mixed cottage garden border.

Why Grow Sea Holly?

  • 🏡 Ideal for Mixed Cottage Gardens – Producing lots of flowers after traditional May/June flush has finished. A traditional heirloom cottage garden flower, perfect for rustic mixed cottage gardens plantings.

  • Late flower power and has real impact in the middle os a border or in large drifts

Growing Information:

  • 🌱 Sow: in late summer or save seed to April in a prepared seed bed or pots of seed compost. Scattered seed in mixed beds does not do well with competition and will likeley fail. Grow seedlings on and transplant to growing position when the plants are at the 4 to 8 leaf stage.

  • ☀️ Position: Ideal full sun, or mixed border and tolerates very poor and gravel-filled soils. Drought tolerant when established.

  • 📏 Spacing: Loves growing as a single specimum plant in gravel or pots. Mature plants can form crowns 12-18-inches across. Grow as single plants, Sea Holly grows well in gravel and can manage in large pots or containers.

  • 🌾 Harvest: seed from brown seed head in Autumn and sow immediately.
