Gardeners Cottage Blakeney Lilac Blue Perennial Scabious Nautia Arvensis Seeds

  • An easy-to-grow, short lived perennial that grows in our Mid-Norfolk Garden
  • Flowers July and August while simultaneously setting seed
  • An absolute magnet to bees and other pollinators, providing a succession of necter throughout the late summer months.
  • Other common names include Knautia Arvensis, Sweet Scabious or Pincushions
  • Self-seeds abundantly when established
  • Mixing well with herbaceous plantings, the Lilac pincushion like flowers are held on open stems reaching 3-4 feet
  • It is great grown in the front of the border or the edge of a path.
  • Very easy to grow, and can be sown directly where you want them to grow in the autumn as nature does. Alternatively the seed can be saved and planted in seed compost in seed trays or pots in the spring, which makes it much easier to spot your baby Scabious plants.
  • Seeds sown in autumn may over-winter and germinate the following spring
  • If sowing in spring sow March to May in seed trays under cover.

Field Scabious can be grown as single plants, but for maximum impact, plant in groups of 5 to 7 with a foot to 18-inches between plants.  It's easy to cultivate, disease resistant, and doesn't get eaten by the wildlife that we spotted so it makes an ideal addition to any cottage garden

When is the best time to sow Field Scabious seeds in UK

In the UK, Field seeds would naturally spread from the plant and germinate over the late summer and autumn, young plants form rosette crowns of leaves and are most likely to flower the following summer. Seeds planted in early spring will form good-size plants in a single season and flower in August and September.

To extend the flowering season, we usually do a combination of both.
