Gardeners Cottage Blakeney Red Frills Mustard Salad Leaf
- An very easy to grow and reliable salad leaf that can be sown from March to November and once you have it in a vegetable garden you will never be without it as it reliably self-seeds. The young seedlings are easy to spot by their distinctive colour, and can be transplanted into salad beds as required.
- Mild lettuce taste, not hot or peppery like some mustards, mixes very well with our salad leaves and looks wonderful on the plate or in a leaf salad mix with rocket and lambs lettuce
- My personal favorite over winter salad crop, sown outdoors, it is one of the first spring salad leaves to be ready from late February in mild seasons. Under glass or plastic can be harvested continuously all year as a cut and come again salad.
- If left plants grow to 4 feets and produce massive seed pods like most mustards.
- Traditional cottage vegetable garden favorite
- Self-seeds abundantly when established
- Very easy to grow, and can be sown directly by scattering them on the surface where you want them to germinate.
- Seed sown in autumn out-doors will germinate quickly and plants will over-winter before thickening up into cut-able heads or frilly red salad leaves the following spring
- Does well in full sun and well-drained soil, Protect from birds while young
