Easter Bonnet is a tall  Heirloom Bearded Iris attributed to Iris breeders Alexander & Norton, and has a recorded introduction date of 1943. It is listed in the 1952 catalog as a cross between V. Morocco Rose and V.Alastor.

Easter Bonnet is not currently in commercial propagation and is only available from specialist nurseries and collectors.

Easter Bonnet is a vigorous Iris suitable for most soil conditions and reliably flowers in May and June in the UK. It is a tall flowering Bearded Iris, up to 40-inch and stems hold 4-5 flowers which open from the terminal tip downwards over a 1 to 2 week period.

A very fine rhodenite pink with a wide margin of burnished gold on both standards and falls. A gold beard sets this fine Iris off to good advantage.”Flowers are large and desrcibed as Rodenite Pink (Mauve) with yellow, particularly the falls, which are notably edged with gold veins. The beard is vibrant Yellow

The plants form a fine architectural upright feature during April and May and the leaves have a purple tinge to the lower sections closest to the Rhizome. Easter Bonnet, like all large irises, spreads out slowly over 2-3 years, and will benefit from lifting, dividing and the removal of any old and dying rhizome material. Divided healthy rhizomes should be planted in their flowering position during the summer and grown on to flower the following May.

Rhizomes are very robust and even small segments will root if healthy buds are present. Plant bare-rooted rhizomes as soon as they are received, allowing good coverage of the roots while lying the rhizomes on or partially in-bedded in the surface. Avoid freshly manured soil or rich compost layers or leaf mold. Irises love feed but hate cold  and wet.

What you will get sent.

You are buying freshly lifted and prepared bare rooted rhizomes. These will be a section of healthy rhizome and a growing leaf bud/stem. The leaf growth will be trimmed to the classic short arrow tip shape to facilitate delivery, but this also reduces wind movement on the rhizome and roots as the plant gets established.
